Pediatric Sleep Disorders
Children of all ages, from the newborn on up, are subject to learned patterns of sleep based on parental response and reinforcement of certain behaviors. Often times, a child’s sleep disorder is only defined as such when it finally becomes too much for the parents to handle. These group of disorders are called sleep association disorders and can be unlearned by the child if proper and consistent reinforcement is provided.
All sleep disorders that affect adults can affect children, with different, but very significant consequences. Any sleep fragmenting disorder, such as OSA, PLMD, and even snoring, have been found to be strongly linked to behavioral problems, cognitive deficits, and ADHD. Data has shown that there is no such thing as "benign snoring" in children.
